CURRENT STATUS
I-29 is reduced to one NB and one SB lane at the 52nd Ave interchange. Speeds are 40 MPH.
SCOPE
The 52nd Ave. S interchange at I-29 will be rebuilt to provide additional through lanes, turn lanes and new ramps to access I-29. 52nd Ave. S will be widened between 31st St. and 38th St. from two lanes to six through lanes, additional right turn lanes and a pedestrian crossing. The NDDOT is also partnering with the City of Fargo to reconstruct 52nd Ave. S between University Drive and I-29.
PURPOSE
Additional capacity will be provided by new loop ramps in the northwest and southeast quadrants of the new interchange at 52nd Ave. S and I-29. Loop ramps improve efficiency for traffic that is trying to access I-29 from 52nd Ave. S because they offer right side free-flow exiting, therefore eliminating a left turn component for traffic turning across the intersection to access the ramps. This also allows for more green time for the east-west traffic on 52nd Ave. S.
FUNDING
Bids were taken in January. With a bid of $23.1 million, the apparent low bidder for the 52nd Ave. S interchange project is Industrial Builders, Inc. Funding will be 70.6% federal, 6.4% state and 23% local.
For the roadway portion (52nd Ave. S from University Drive to I-29), the apparent low bidder is Master Construction of Fargo, at $9.8 million.
START
Late March or early April is the expected start time.
